What can i do to make and ugly fire place look better?

i have a fireplace that is old made out of bricks that are coming off and it's horrible. i don't know what to do with it since we are remodeling the basement. and i don't want it to look like and ugly fire place i just don't want that fireplace there. What can i do to make it look like it's kind of not even there???
