Was Beethoven really deaf? How did he compose his music?

I'm sorry, but Len is incorrect, Beethovenian scholar or not. Beethoven was not completely deaf by age 32. Carl Czerny stated that Beethoven could hear speech and music normally until 1812. That would put his age at 42. Perhaps "32" was just a typo.
